2021 Gallery Exhibits

20th Annual Poet Artist Collaboration | April 30-June 21, 2021

Red Wing Arts is excited to announce that we will be hosting the 20th Annual Poet-Artist Collaboration exhibit in April 2021! Despite COVID, Red Wing Arts held the 19th Annual Poet Artist Collaboration in 2020. We were honored to work with Marie at Crossings to ensure our first time ever hosting the event maintained the integrity, respect, and design of the event. We are pivoting through COVID and intend to hang the exhibit in the Gallery and provide a hybrid experience of in-person and virtual enjoyment.

Plein Air 2021 | June-August 15, 2021

Plein Air (which is close to meaning “open air” in French) is a study of how light and shadow interact with things, creating a snapshot of one moment in time that can never be repeated. Artists come from around the region to paint our Red Wing. Each year over 100 works are hung, judged and exhibited.

“The Red Wing Plein Air Event is about this place. Since this event started, over a thousand paintings have been created of Red Wing and the surrounding area. That’s not common, but neither is Red Wing.”

- Joshua Cunningham, Nationally Awarded Plein Air Artist

Material Geometry | September 4-5, 2021

This two-day exhibition features nine smaller paintings by John Wells using a variety of colors and materials to explore the spatial relationships of shapes, sizes and the relative positions of forms.

John Wells is a fiscal year 2021 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Close to Home | Nov 26-Jan 10, 2022

Featuring 52 paintings by Hannah C. Heyer & Andy Evansen

Hannah and Andy have lived in the rural Midwest their entire lives, giving them a unique appreciation of the simple beauty of a landscape that changes with the seasons in both drastic and subtle ways.  This exhibition was borne out of their desire to share their observations over the course of a year that found all of us closer to home than ever. The paintings document the seasonal shifts in southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin, an area filled with rolling farmlands, bluffs along the Mississippi River covered in deciduous trees, and big skies. Each artist will exhibit 26 paintings, marking the transition from the cold blanket of winter to the melting of spring; the humid greens of summer to the first pops of autumn color; and the ways in which these seasons affect not only the landscape but the people who live here.
