Our 2024 event features 42 juried artists and poets participating in an art exhibit, poetry readings, and published in a chapbook featuring all artwork and poetry of the participants.
From the poems chosen, participating artists create a new piece of art inspired by one of the poems. The joy and challenge of this event is the translation of the emotion and story of the written words of a poet by an artist into a representative piece of art.
2024 Poet & Artist Jurors
Joyce Sutphen
Joyce Sutphen grew up on a farm in Stearns County, Minnesota. Her first book of poetry, Straight Out of View, won the Barnard New Women’s Poets Prize Press,1995). Her second book of poems, Coming Back to the Body (Holy Cow! Press, 2000), was a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award, and her third book, Naming the Stars (Holy Cow! Press, 2004), won the Minnesota Book Award in Poetry. Her recent books are Carrying Water to the Field: New and Selected Poems (University of Nebraska Press, 2019), This Long Winter (Carnegie Mellon Press 2021), and That Other Life (2023). She served as the Minnesota Poet Laureate from 2011 to 2021, succeeding Robert Bly, and she is professor emerita of literature and creative writing at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.
John Ready
John grew up along the Mississippi River near La Crescent, Minnesota and currently lives and maintains his studio in Brownsville, just downriver from La Crescent. Before retiring in 2018, he served as the director of the University Art Gallery at UW-La Crosse for eighteen years. His work is predominately sculptural/environmental, working with issues of systems of value and contextual meanings. John has an extensive list of curatorial experiences and solo exhibitions, and his work is in numerous public and private collections throughout the country.

2024 Poet Artist Collaboration Chapbook
20 Poets and 20 Artists have been selected to participate in Red Wing Arts 2023 Poet Artist Collaboration. The Chapbook also includes poetry and artwork of the two jurors selected for the 2024 event. All work, matching poem to the artwork it has inspired, has been beautifully laid out in the annual Chapbook this event produces.
A perfect way to take in both the written word, and the visuals it has inspired.
