Exhibit: Threads That Bind

Threads That Bind is a two-part project about remembrance and how we can memorialize those we have lost through death. The paradox that surrounds death is that we are all missing the dead but also unwilling to talk about them in our daily life. In our culture, there tends to be a feeling of taboo or morbidity surrounding death, therefore we shy away from conversations about the death of a loved one.

Part one of Threads that Bind is a collection of printed textiles and stitched remembrance works of art by Dawn Zero Erickson. This collection of very personal textile pieces by Dawn are in memory of people from her life. While researching, creating, and performing the multitude of repetitive steps in making these pieces, Dawn had time to cherish memories of each of these people who continue to be a prominent part of her life - a joyful sorrow.

In part two of the project, Dawn led community members through workshops of meaningful making to slow stitch a remembrance for someone they have lost through death, while learning and practicing new techniques. Participants selected a small token from their loved one to include in their piece; such as buttons, textiles, cookie cutters, game pieces, a key, and jewelry. As participants designed and stitched a tangible connection to the past, a multitude of stories and memories were exchanged.

The collective stitched remembrance pieces in this exhibit bring beauty to the sadness.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.

Strong and Simple Watercolor with Dan Wiemer

Strong and Simple Watercolor with Dan Wiemer

  • Red Wing Arts Clay & Creative Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In this workshop, Dan will teach you techniques that help solve the mysteries of watercolor. You will learn how to work with the watercolor medium, including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry and luminous washes through a series of smaller studies and Dan’s approach of “see it, simplify it, and state it”.

The class is fun and fast-paced. Participants will watch demonstrations and then apply the concepts to their own work through hands-on painting. Dan also uses friendly back and forth critiques for constructive feedback.

This class is watercolor only and does not include Dan’s technique of combining acrylic with watercolor.

Teaching artist: Dan Wiemer

Level: Beginning to Intermediate

Class size: 20

Participation fee: $235

Supply list:

Many people already have supplies that are fine. Bring those; you can impress your neighbors and your teacher.

WATERCOLOR PAINTS: I use a fairly traditional collection of colors. If you have others you enjoy working with that’s fine, bring them. Mine include cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, raw sienna, burnt sienna, Cadmium or winsor red, alizarin crimson (or permanent rose), Sap green, viridian and Paynes gray or neutral tint that I often use for value studies. You may have some wonderful new colors to show me! It is easier for watercolor artists to have the paints already squeezed into and dried in a plastic palette with a lid. I recommend you do this process several days prior to the workshop.

BRUSHES: Bring several different size brushes. I prefer round brushes but you can also bring flat brushes.

PAPER: Sheets or blocks are fine, just make sure it is 100% rag (cotton). No student-grade paper for your sake and mine. Student grade paper leads to more frustration and pain than the money you save. There are many fine rag papers. I recommend 140# Arches cold pressed or hot pressed because this can handle the repetitive masking process of the technique you will learn. Softer papers are not sufficient for this process. All of our studies will be 11x15 quarter sheets or smaller. If you have trouble finding 140# Arches paper, Dan will have some available for purchase.

OTHER: Pencil, sketchpad or copy paper, soft eraser (Magicrub) or something like a white eraser, container for clean water, roll of paper towels, board or piece of Masonite to tape down loose paper, masking tape.

If you already have a watercolor palette, don’t spend a whole lot of money or change your palette for this workshop,

Painting Bold Watercolors with Andy Evansen

Painting Bold Watercolors with Andy Evansen

  • Red Wing Arts Clay & Creative Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

There seems to be a never-endinq quest to loosen up in watercolor and it’s probably the most common goal of students. It’s easy to fall into the trap of putting too much into your paintings, and editing out the non-essential whether working from photo reference or painting on location is vital.

Painting loosely doesn't just 'happen', it comes from gaining a comfort level with your skills and materials over time. However, there are techniques that can speed up this process.

My workshop will focus on using value studies from the outset to identify the large shapes in a scene. These large shapes provide the artist with opportunities for lost edges when painting in watercolor, which is essential if we are to take full advantage of the medium. Too often the 'found edges', or details, take over the painter's thinking process, and the result is a tight watercolor.

We will move on toward color paintings using value studies as our guide, and complete color painting lessons together. Demonstration paintings will be done by Andy to reinforce the lessons.

“My interest in art started at a young age, and I spent a great deal of my time drawing. When I began watercolor painting in my 20s, I was inspired mostly by the British artists Edward Seago, Ed Wesson and Trevor Chamberlain. Their ability to capture the landscape with such an economy of brushstroke is remarkable, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition, I was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty, subjects that many would simply pass by.

I now find myself trying to emulate that in my watercolors of the Midwest.”

  • April 2, 3, 4 from 9 am-4 pm each day

  • Teaching artist: Andy Evansen

  • Level: Intermediate

  • Age: 16+

Andy has been featured in many publications and is a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally. He became a signature member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) in 2012 and served as their President from 2015-2017.

His paintings have won numerous awards, including the Bronze and High Winds Medals from the American Watercolor Society.

His love of painting on location also led to him being a featured presenter at the 2014 and 2016 Plein Air Conventions and inclusion in the 2017 Qingdao International Masters Watercolor Plein Air Event.

In 2022 he was voted into the Pure Watercolour Society of England as an International Member.

The classes aim to introduce various art techniques and mediums, allowing young artists to discover their unique styles and interests through art-based games, art challenges, and mini-projects.

Additionally, the program seeks to build confidence, enhance problem-solving skills and emphasize the importance of commitment and perseverance in artmaking. We aim to cultivate a community of young artists who support and learn from one another. Meaning Making with Collage Instructed by Ann E Lawton

We often put aside and neglect our creative desires and reflection of ourselves in our fast-paced, grind culture-influenced lives. This workshop aims to provide participants with an invitation to connect to their creativity and meaning making through the process and application of collage. Using simple materials and tools, we’ll explore how the simple act of sifting, sorting, cutting, and arranging paper ephemera offers a sanctuary of rest, reflection and a catalyst for self-discovery.

Collage is a versatile application with found materials and paper items; no drawing or other art skills are required to engage in this transformative art-making process. This workshop will explore technique and composition basics and a variety of guided reflective experiences for participants to trust the creative process and cultivate personal meaning through their creative process from start to finish.

Date/Time: Oct 26, 9 am - 5 pm with a one hour lunch break

Workshop Skill/Age Level: Open to all, no previous experience needed ages 16 and up

Workshop Capacity: 15

Materials Provided and Retained by Students: A variety of paper products, Xacto knives, cutting mats, glue

Students Bring Scissors, a sketchbook, pen/pencil

Workshop Facilitator Bio: Ann E. Lawton, MS, ATR-BC, is an artist, art therapist, and art educator living and working in River Falls, Wisconsin. She has taught at UW-River Falls since 2011 and currently facilitates in-home art therapy services with neuro-divergent children in the St. Croix Valley of Western Wisconsin. Lawton’s studio practice focuses on mixed media, having had previous collage-intensive artist residencies at BreckCreates in Breckenridge, CO, and at the MERZ Gallery in Sanquhar, Scotland.
