Step into the world of lutherie, where artists transform raw wood into instruments of extraordinary beauty and sound. Shaping Sound: The Hand-built Guitar is an immersive exhibit celebrating the artistry, precision, and passion behind handcrafted acoustic guitars.
This show features a stunning collection of hand-built guitars, each a testament to the artistry, skill, and dedication of today’s finest luthiers including: T. Drew Heinonen, Charlie Hoffman, Philip Lang, Rachel Levin, Todd M. Lunneborg, James A. Olson, Lee Sadler, Tim Reede, Benjamin Williams, Paul Woolson, and music-inspired artworks by Wiley Harang and Bruce Hecksel.
Visitors will explore the meticulous process of guitar making – from the careful selection of tonewoods to the delicate bracing and intricate inlay work. Displays offer insight into the craftsmanship and innovation that shape these instruments.
In the luthier world, southeast Minnesota has earned a reputation as a launching point for some of the most skilled and innovative guitar makers in the country. Minnesota State College Southeast’s Guitar Repair and Building Program, based in Red Wing, is one of the most respected guitar-building and repair programs in the world. Since the program launched in 1974, decades of graduates have gone on to work for legendary brands, open acclaimed custom shops, and push the craft forward in ways that ripple through the entire industry.
For this exhibit, the college has contributed a variety of materials that illustrate key stages of the guitar-building process. Visitors will gain insight into the transformation of raw wood into finely crafted instruments through detailed photos, descriptions, and hands-on examples provided by the college. Several of the legendary luthiers featured in the exhibit are alumni, current and former instructors of Minnesota State College Southeast’s Guitar Program.
“Red Wing is a place where music and craftsmanship meet, and Shaping Sound is a celebration of that spirit. Our community is home to incredible talent — from seasoned luthiers to students just beginning their journey at Minnesota State College Southeast. This exhibit honors the artistry that’s been nurtured here and invites everyone to experience the beauty, skill, and heart that go into creating these instruments.” — Emily Foos, Executive Director, Red Wing Arts
