Featured Panelists

Sharon Mansur
Sharon Mansur (she/her) is originally from Boston, and currently based in Winona, Mni Sota Makoce/MN, Dakota land. She is a dance/interdisciplinary artist, curator, educator, arts administrator, and facilitator of gatherings that embody creativity, social justice and healing practices. Sharon has been fortunate to work at Dance Place, in Washington, DC, BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange in Brooklyn, NY, and more recently with Frozen River Film Festival and Art of the Rural in Winona. She has received grant support from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council and the Rochester Downtown Alliance, and has participated in residencies at NE Sculpture | Gallery Factory (Minneapolis), Fishbowl Studios (Seattle), and Threshold Arts (Rochester), among others.

Featured Artist Pop-up: Chap Achen

Each month we feature a area artist in our Depot Shop - our March featured artist is Chap Achen. Come meet the artist on Saturday, March 14 from 12-2 pm! During this pop-up Chap will have an expanded offering of prints available for sale and will demonstrate his collection of film and digital cameras in our Depot Gallery. He’ll share how different formats, lenses, and camera systems influence the final image, discuss the unique qualities of shooting film versus digital, and talk through the creative and technical decisions behind his work. This is a great opportunity to see the tools of his craft up close, ask questions, and gain insight into his photographic process.

MARCH FEATURED ARTIST OF THE MONTH: CHAP ACHEN

I have been photographing the area in and around Red Wing for almost 50 years and winter is my favorite subject. I am often drawn to black and white presentation.

Digital photography changed my approach but I still enjoy the monochrome image. I now have the luxury of shooting in color and making decisions based on the best presentation of the image. Portraits and Travel are favorites today.

About the Artist: Trained as a graphic designer with a degree from Iowa State, Dan paints in the studio and on location (plein air), and has won many awards including several best-of-show in juried competitions and art fairs throughout the Midwest.

For more than 25 years, Dan has taught watercolor and previously served as the president of the MN Watercolor Society. His technique uniquely combines opaque acrylic with transparent watercolor that stylizes the landscape and is influenced by printmakers and batik artists.

Dan has been fortunate to have two extended stays in China - painting, teaching and exhibiting. In addition to China, he has painted in Puerto Rico, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and throughout the United States.

“I am obsessed with design, negative shape making and the ruggedness of the north. These obsessions led me to study Canadian painters, most notably Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, who worked primarily in the early 1900’s. The illustrative style is personally relatable to me. Their career paths evolved from graphic designers, to illustrators, to painters. This has been my path as well.

Finding rhythm in the landscape has become a hallmark of my work. Rhythm to me is connecting highlight shapes with linked shadow shapes in an interesting way that creates movement and pathways for the eye.

My technique uniquely combines opaque acrylic with transparent watercolor that stylizes the landscape and is influenced by printmakers and batik artists. Their approach to creating negative shapes is similar to how I construct and distill my scenes. “ - Dan Wiemer

Whether you’re an artist or simply curious, it’s a welcoming way to meet people and see how another artist works.

Artist Bio
I am obsessed with design, negative shape making and the ruggedness of the north. These obsessions led me to study Canadian painters, most notably Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, who worked primarily in the early 1900’s. The illustrative style is personally relatable to me. My technique uniquely combines opaque acrylic with transparent watercolor that stylizes the landscape and is influenced by printmakers and batik artists. Their approach to creating negative shapes is similar to how I construct and distill my scenes.

Painting on location (plein air) and in the studio are different experiences and bring different perspectives to my work. As a past president of the MN Watercolor Society, I saw firsthand the endless variety of ways to handle watermedia. This excited me and drove me to explore and develop the distinctive style I have today.

I was fortunate to have two extended stays in China-- painting, teaching and exhibiting. In addition to China, I have painted in Puerto Rico, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and throughout the United States.

Red Wing Arts is pleased to present our monthly ARTSpeak artist professional development program!

Join us at 6 pm on the second Tuesday of each month for this free program designed to support both emerging and established artists.

Each month we’ll alternate between panel discussions featuring experts on topics that build business skills and professional growth, and studio visits and networking sessions. Artists and creatives of all disciplines are welcome!

About the Artist: “I have been a fiber artist for most of my life. My work has been rich in texture with exciting color, has strong eye appeal and often a message of environmental stewardship. When I discovered natural dyes I read everything I could find about the cultures, history, geography and politics that surround textiles and natural dyes. I also discovered that I could locally forage for dye materials in the prairies, ditches, woodlands, by the streams and in some of my friend’s gardens. I was seeing Natures Gentle Colors in a whole new way.  I would ask my mentor for recipes and processes. He finally told me to use my eyes and head. That has served me well. I can now collaborate with the materials having mastered techniques. However, I still have green stains on my knees.” Judy has a stula (studio lab) in Northfield, MN. A Cultural Heritage Presentation and Czech Glass Jewelry Design Workshop by Andrea Turini

Join Minnesota jewelry artist Andrea Turini on June 27th from 10:30am-12pm as she brings audiences inside the living traditions of Czech glass and beadmaking. Her presentation, Heirloom Fire: Czech Glasswork, draws on firsthand experiences in Jablonec nad Nisou, a region long recognized as a world center of bead and button production.

Then, audience members have the option to attend the Czech Glass Jewelry Design Workshop from 1-2pm.

The presentation is free and open to all, but please RSVP by following the registration link below. If you plan to add on the workshop, please make this selection in addition to the presentation option at check out.

During the presentation, audiences will learn about:

Cultural Storytelling

  • The evolution of the Czech glass industry, from family workshops to state-run factories under communism, and how artists adapted their craft during these changing eras

  • Generational traditions — families who have passed down lampworking, pressing, and cutting techniques for centuries

  • The cultural significance of beads and buttons, both as local artistry and as exports that shaped global fashion

  • The resilience of a cottage industry that once fed an entire region, where survival depended on glass and beadmaking — and the fact that many workshops remain in business today is nothing short of astounding

Interactive Demonstration

  • Step-by-step look at how a bead and a button are made

  • Sample beads at different production stages for audiences to handle

  • A Czech button mold and examples of finished jewelry featuring Czech glass

Add-On Workshop: Czech Glass Jewelry Design Class

Following the presentation, participants can enjoy a one-hour hands-on jewelry design session. Each person will design a coordinating set — either:

  • Earrings + Necklace, or

  • Earrings + Bracelet

Participants select from Andrea’s curated collection of authentic Czech glass beads to create their designs. Andrea demonstrates design concepts and assists with selection, then completes the technical finishing (wrapping, crimping and assembly) during class.

About the Artist

I have been a creator of beautiful, handmade jewelry for over 30 years. A master jeweler, I recently spent ten years in NYC studying under experts from all over the world, developing my skills and honing my craft.

While I have experience with many mediums, my passion lies in bead embroidery, the creation of intricate and unique designs that bring a sense of depth and dimension to each piece of jewelry.

I take pride in creating high-quality, one-of-a-kind pieces that are both comfortable and stylish. I use only the finest materials, including gemstones, Swarovski crystals and pearls, and Japanese seed beads, and stitch them onto thick wool felt and then build up. This creates a range of textures and colors that bring each three-dimensional piece to life.

Recognition

This program was awarded a Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) grant, recognizing its artistic and educational value. While the grant supports a tour in southeastern Minnesota, Andrea also offers the program to arts centers, libraries, cultural groups, and community organizations across the region.

About the Artist: My mission as a painter is to spread joy, using visual harmony to balance the stress and chaos of our fraught world. Capturing moments of light-filled peace, I build fantasies that become momentarily real; reminders to indulge in the joy of life. The freedom, immediacy, and visceral satisfaction I feel while working fills up my soul in the very best way. I was born in New England, but grew up and still live in Minneapolis, MN. I studied art at Macalester College, graduating in 2009. Since 2023 I have focused almost exclusively on painting, and I am now lucky enough to paint full time. I live with my husband, kids, and too many pets in South Minneapolis.

A Value Approach to Watercolor with Andy Evansen - FULL

There seems to be a never-endinq quest to loosen up in watercolor and it’s probably the most common goal of students. It’s easy to fall into the trap of putting too much into your paintings, and editing out the non-essential whether working from photo reference or painting on location is vital.

Painting loosely doesn't just 'happen', it comes from gaining a comfort level with your skills and materials over time. However, there are techniques that can speed up this process.

My workshop will focus on using value studies from the outset to identify the large shapes in a scene. These large shapes provide the artist with opportunities for lost edges when painting in watercolor, which is essential if we are to take full advantage of the medium. Too often the 'found edges', or details, take over the painter's thinking process, and the result is a tight watercolor.

We will move on toward color paintings using value studies as our guide, and complete color painting lessons together. Demonstration paintings will be done by Andy to reinforce the lessons.

“My interest in art started at a young age, and I spent a great deal of my time drawing. When I began watercolor painting in my 20s, I was inspired mostly by the British artists Edward Seago, Ed Wesson and Trevor Chamberlain. Their ability to capture the landscape with such an economy of brushstroke is remarkable, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition, I was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty, subjects that many would simply pass by. I now find myself trying to emulate that in my watercolors of the Midwest.”

Andy has been featured in many publications and has become a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally. His paintings have won numerous awards, including the Bronze and High Winds Medals from the American Watercolor Society, where he is now a Dolphin Fellow. His love of painting on location also led to him being a featured presenter at the 2014 and 2016 Plein Air Conventions and inclusion in the 2017 Qingdao International Masters Watercolor Plein Air Event. In 2022 he was voted into the Pure Watercolour Society of England as an International Member.

In his landscapes, Granlund shares the rhythms, layers and patterns that he senses particular to the site, capturing the bodily experience of place. In his still lifes, Granlund is taking traditional still life objects/motifs and pairing, punning and counterpointing them with non-traditional still life objects and situations while commenting on our American culture which substitutes and imitates rather than wading deeper into personal experience.

Granlund earned a BA from Bethel University in Saint Paul, MN and an MFA degree from City University of New York at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, New York.

The artist has participated in exhibitions at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Oberling Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison; University of Minnesota at Morris; the Bell Museum of Natural History, Minneapolis; Duluth Art Institute; Charles H. McNider Museum, Mason City, IA; Neville Public Museum of Brown County, Green Bay, WI; Hunter College, Manhattan; Westbeth Gallery, Manhattan; Site: Brooklyn Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; and the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition winning both first place Drawing and First Place Painting Awards. He has had solo exhibits at Hopkins Center for the Arts, Hopkins, MN; Phipps Center for the Arts, Hudson, WI; and Watermark Art Center, Bemidji, MN.

Granlund has also been a public art administrator for the last thirty years. First for the Saint Paul Department of Parks and Recreation and currently with Metro Transit in the Twin Cities. He has overseen the selection and installation of numerous public art projects by other artists, as well as creating or heading the creative team, on twenty-eight public art projects of his own. Granlund also privately consults on public art and its integration into natural and landscaped environments.

ARTSpeak - Studio Visit with Steven Sorman

ARTSpeak - Studio Visit with Steven Sorman

Join us in the studio of artist Steven Sorman for an engaging ARTSpeak visit. It’s a great opportunity to connect with other artists, share ideas, and find inspiration. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at his creative process, hear how he approaches his work, and have time to ask questions or chat along the way.

Artist Bio
Steven Sorman was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1948. Internationally known as a painter and printmaker, Sorman earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from University of Minnesota in 1971. Sorman lives and works in Red Wing, Minnesota.  He is best known for his multimedia, complex paintings, drawings and prints. Sorman is a master at orchestrating theme, line, layer, media, and color into challenging images that demand a rhythm of eye movement throughout his artwork.

Among museums internationally that include his work in their collections are the Stedkijk Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Commissions include the Springhill Foundation, Prudential Insurance, IBM, Honeywell and Hyatt Regency. Sorman won the Bush Foundation Artist's Fellowship in 1979, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Merit World Print III Award in 1980, the Rockefeller Foundation American Center Artist in Residence in Paris in 1982 and the 2nd Bhrat Bhavan International Biennial of Prints Merit Award in 1991.

Numerous one-artist exhibitions have featured Sorman's work in galleries in Singapore, Sweden and the United States. His work has been exhibited in numerous invitationals.

Art critic and curator Mason Riddle noted the subtle evolution and reinvention of Sorman as he wrote, "Where some artists make a career out of bold stylistic shifts, Sorman excels in a consistency of artistic practice. With the eye of a connoisseur, he discriminately borrows formal elements from the aesthetic trove of his past to create a more visually compelling present. His creative slate is never wiped clean, only refined. Nor does one ever sense that a mark has been made, a form envisioned, or a process explored just 'to try something new.' While a new spirit is often evident, it is one that is confident with the past."
