Exhibit - Rooted: Art & Belonging

Home is more than just a place – it’s a feeling, a connection, a sense of belonging. Rooted: Art & Belonging explores the warmth and comfort of being surrounded by beautifully crafted, functional works of art. Featuring regional artists who draw inspiration from personal histories, cultural traditions, and the everyday beauty of familiar spaces, this exhibition celebrates the deep-rooted connections between art and home.

From textiles and ceramics to paintings and sculpture, each piece in Rooted embodies the care, creativity, and craftsmanship that make a space feel truly lived in and loved. This show invites viewers to reflect on what it means to feel at home—whether through the objects we cherish, the spaces we create, or the stories we carry with us.

Exhibit - The Gaia Series by Marion Angelica

“The Gaia Series” by Marion Angelica | Jan 8-18, 2026

On view in the Veeder Gallery, this series of ceramic works is inspired by Marion’s fascination with rocks, particularly their cracks and crevices. Featuring porcelain vessels that, while reminiscent of rock-like formations, are designed to be enjoyed in the home for entertaining and daily life.

Marion hopes that people can value and feel a connection to Gaia, our natural world, even when we are in our human-designed homes or workplaces. The exteriors of her vessels are stained with iron and other natural minerals and the interiors are glazed. All the work is food-safe yet still carries the natural feeling of our home, the spinning rocky planet Earth.

Exhibit - "Torchbearers" by Jacob Docksey

Exhibit - "Torchbearers" by Jacob Docksey

“Torchbearers” is a new body of work created by St. Paul based artist Jacob Docksey. Completed during his 2025 travels exploring Minnesota caves, this exhibition contains landscape paintings of subterranean environments, still life works of caving equipment, and charcoal drawings of local cavers in action. His landscape paintings were completed from observation on site and are intimate looks into hidden underground worlds. The still life paintings show a more time extensive process, and are life sized, one to one, depictions of mud-covered tools borrowed from cave sites. The charcoal drawings help show the camaraderie of the caving community and express in greater detail rock formations, and the dramatic lighting created when exploring these dark spaces. On view in the Vogel Gallery.

Artist Bio

Jacob Docksey is a visual artist currently residing in St. Paul, Minnesota. Born in 1994 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Jacob attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout where he attained a B.F.A in Studio Art with a painting concentration. Initially dedicated to oil painting he also creates stop-motion animations with traditional mediums like charcoal and chalk pastel. He draws inspiration from 20th century artists such as Ashcan School painter George Bellows, for his raw documentation of early industrial America, and Czechoslovakian filmmaker Jan Švankmajer for his surrealistic narratives.

Jacob Docksey has shown around much of the US and has received awards in group exhibitions at the Gamut Gallery C4W exhibition and Prometheus Exhibition at the Furlong Gallery, as well as partaken in the 2018 Survey of Wisconsin Artists at the Charles Allis Museum in Milwaukee. His work is part of the UW Stout permanent collection and His involvement in plein air painting was used in 2020 for a story titled “Fresh Air, Fresh Paint” in the Leader Telegram. Recently he was awarded a Creative Individual grant from the Minnesota State Art Board

Artist Statement

For millennia caves have played a significant role in human survival. Throughout time these underground environments have gained unique attributions from sites of primordial creation and ritual, to shelters that preserved prehistoric art. Minnesota is home to a wide variety of natural caves and historic excavations that contribute to a rich history. Layers beneath our feet, deposits of rock run throughout the Twin Cities metro area and continue to spread underneath the Driftless Region. Existing since the Ordovician Era over 450 millions years ago, the architect of time has been hard at work tunneling through layers of Platteville limestone, St. Peters sandstone, and dolomite, crafting unimaginable passages and chambers.

While exploring sites for my own documentation, I visited both natural and manmade caves in Minnesota. I discovered that St. Paul is home to many abandoned sites of antiquated industries. Previously utilized for brick making quarries, mushroom farming, dairy refrigeration, and even mobster run speak easies, some of these subterranean spaces are still accessible if you know where to look. Today dedicated adventurers continue to expand these subterranean worlds, making new discoveries, and documenting their findings. The Minnesota Caving Club is a community of people who have a passion for history, geography, and exploration. Equally so, experienced urban explorers continue to investigate the wonders of the Twin Cities underground world deserted long ago.

My work is equal parts adventure-seeking and documentation. As a plein air painter, I’m interested in creating visual records of places I explore and find thrill in discovering unusual environments that are rarely captured. Painting inside caves has required me to overcome new demands like accessibility, challenging climates, and even the occasional psychological discomfort. During my expeditions I am equipped with a travel easel, painting supplies, and provisions, all stowed in a rugged backpack. After hours of working, when my light sources are likely signaling low battery, I emerge from my subterranean studio welcomed by a warm humidity fogging up my glasses. It is not only finishing the painting that gives me a sense of achievement but the endurance required to complete these experiences.

This exhibition is dedicated to the community of cavers and urban explorers who taught me about this vast underground world of Minnesota. To the Minnesota Caving Club; Dave, Michael, John, Shaun, Xavier, Erik, Link, Dillon, Dan, and Ben, thanks for your expertise and trust in letting me join on some great expeditions. To the explorers of local sites; Oren, Peyton, and Cecil, thanks for helping me uncover a historic aspect of St. Paul that added a whole new dimension to this project. Whether it was your warning of the “death pits” scattered throughout Holy Grail, or your immediate response after falling 8 feet from a crumbling sandstone hold, you all provided expertise and knowledge that helped me create this work

Jacob Docksey is a fiscal year 2025 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

About the Artist: My mission as a painter is to spread joy, using visual harmony to balance the stress and chaos of our fraught world. Capturing moments of light-filled peace, I build fantasies that become momentarily real; reminders to indulge in the joy of life. The freedom, immediacy, and visceral satisfaction I feel while working fills up my soul in the very best way. I was born in New England, but grew up and still live in Minneapolis, MN. I studied art at Macalester College, graduating in 2009. Since 2023 I have focused almost exclusively on painting, and I am now lucky enough to paint full time. I live with my husband, kids, and too many pets in South Minneapolis.

A Value Approach to Watercolor with Andy Evansen

A Value Approach to Watercolor with Andy Evansen

  • Red Wing Arts Clay & Creative Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

There seems to be a never-endinq quest to loosen up in watercolor and it’s probably the most common goal of students. It’s easy to fall into the trap of putting too much into your paintings, and editing out the non-essential whether working from photo reference or painting on location is vital.

Painting loosely doesn't just 'happen', it comes from gaining a comfort level with your skills and materials over time. However, there are techniques that can speed up this process.

My workshop will focus on using value studies from the outset to identify the large shapes in a scene. These large shapes provide the artist with opportunities for lost edges when painting in watercolor, which is essential if we are to take full advantage of the medium. Too often the 'found edges', or details, take over the painter's thinking process, and the result is a tight watercolor.

We will move on toward color paintings using value studies as our guide, and complete color painting lessons together. Demonstration paintings will be done by Andy to reinforce the lessons.

“My interest in art started at a young age, and I spent a great deal of my time drawing. When I began watercolor painting in my 20s, I was inspired mostly by the British artists Edward Seago, Ed Wesson and Trevor Chamberlain. Their ability to capture the landscape with such an economy of brushstroke is remarkable, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition, I was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty, subjects that many would simply pass by. I now find myself trying to emulate that in my watercolors of the Midwest.”

Andy has been featured in many publications and has become a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally. His paintings have won numerous awards, including the Bronze and High Winds Medals from the American Watercolor Society, where he is now a Dolphin Fellow. His love of painting on location also led to him being a featured presenter at the 2014 and 2016 Plein Air Conventions and inclusion in the 2017 Qingdao International Masters Watercolor Plein Air Event. In 2022 he was voted into the Pure Watercolour Society of England as an International Member.

Watercolor Foundations: A 3-Week Workshop with Dan Wiemer

  • Red Wing Arts Clay & Creative Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join award-winning artist Dan Wiemer for an immersive 3-week watercolor workshop, where you'll dive deeper into techniques that unlock the mysteries of this dynamic medium. Through guided lessons and focused studies, Dan will help you build confidence and refine your skills, teaching essential watercolor techniques like wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and luminous washes while applying his signature approach: See it, simplify it, state it.

Each session will include hands-on painting, structured watercolor studies, and live demonstrations, giving you the tools to better understand the medium. Dan also provides constructive, back-and-forth critiques in a fun and supportive environment to help you grow as an artist.

To get the most out of this workshop, start practicing now and keep those brushes moving! Think of this class as a way to strengthen your watercolor skills — just like staying in shape, regular practice will help you improve and build confidence with each session.

Whether you're new to watercolor or looking to sharpen your technique, this class will deepen your understanding and creativity!

This class is watercolor only and does not include Dan’s technique of combining acrylic with watercolor. (Images provided for this workshop description are samples only.)

CLASS INFORMATION:

  • Monday evenings: Oct 27, Nov 3, Nov 6 from 6-8:30 pm

  • Teaching artist: Dan Wiemer

  • Level: Beginning to Intermediate

  • Class size: 12

  • Participation fee: $195

SUPPLY LIST:

Many people already have supplies that are fine. Bring those; you can impress your neighbors and your teacher.

WATERCOLOR PAINTS: I use a fairly traditional collection of colors. If you have others you enjoy working with that’s fine, bring them. Mine include cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, raw sienna, burnt sienna, Cadmium or winsor red, alizarin crimson (or permanent rose), Sap green, viridian and Paynes gray or neutral tint that I often use for value studies. You may have some wonderful new colors to show me! It is easier for watercolor artists to have the paints already squeezed into and dried in a plastic palette with a lid. I recommend you do this process several days prior to the workshop.

BRUSHES: Bring several different size brushes. I prefer round brushes but you can also bring flat brushes.

PAPER: Sheets or blocks are fine, just make sure it is 100% rag (cotton). No student-grade paper for your sake and mine. Student grade paper leads to more frustration and pain than the money you save. There are many fine rag papers. I recommend 140# Arches cold pressed or hot pressed because this can handle the repetitive masking process of the technique you will learn. Softer papers are not sufficient for this process. All of our studies will be 11x15 quarter sheets or smaller. If you have trouble finding 140# Arches paper, Dan will have some available for purchase.

OTHER: Pencil, sketchpad or copy paper, soft eraser (Magicrub) or something like a white eraser, container for clean water, roll of paper towels, board or piece of Masonite to tape down loose paper, masking tape.

If you already have a watercolor palette, don’t spend a whole lot of money or change your palette for this workshop, I am not that fussy. If you have any questions about supplies or the workshop don’t hesitate to call or email me. 651-276-5559 danwiemer@gmail.com Thanks - Dan Wiemer

ARTIST BIO: Trained as a graphic designer with a degree from Iowa State, Dan paints in the studio and on location (plein air), and has won many awards including several best-of-show in juried competitions and art fairs throughout the Midwest.

For more than 25 years, Dan has taught watercolor workshops for more than 25 years and previously served as the president of the MN Watercolor Society.  His technique uniquely combines opaque acrylic with transparent watercolor that stylizes the landscape and is influenced by printmakers and batik artists.

Dan has been fortunate to have two extended stays in China - painting, teaching and exhibiting. In addition to China, he has painted in Puerto Rico, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and throughout the United States.

Strong and Simple Watercolor with Dan Wiemer

Strong and Simple Watercolor with Dan Wiemer

  • Red Wing Arts Clay & Creative Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In this workshop, Dan will teach you techniques that help solve the mysteries of watercolor. You will learn how to work with the watercolor medium, including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and luminous washes through a series of smaller studies and Dan’s approach of “see it, simplify it, and state it”.

The class is fun and fast-paced. Participants will watch demonstrations and then apply the concepts to their own work through hands-on painting. Dan also uses friendly back-and-forth critiques for constructive feedback.

This class is watercolor only and does not include Dan’s technique of combining acrylic with watercolor. (Images provided for this workshop description are samples only.)

CLASS INFORMATION:

  • Saturday, October 18, 9 am-4 pm (one hour lunch break)

  • Teaching artist: Dan Wiemer

  • Level: Beginning to Intermediate

  • Class size: 12

  • Participation fee: $175

SUPPLY LIST for Strong and Simple Watercolor:

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

  • Red Wing Arts Clay & Creative Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Unlock your natural drawing abilities in this beginner-friendly class inspired by Betty Edwards’ groundbreaking book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Through a series of engaging exercises, you’ll learn to shift from “left-brain” thinking to “right-brain” perception - helping you draw what you see, not what you think you see. No prior experience is necessary, just an open mind and a willingness to observe. By the end of the course, you’ll be surprised by what you can draw!

Students will learn how to shift their thinking and discover a new way of seeing through structured exercises that focus on perceived edges, space, relationships between objects, light and shadow. Exercises include drawings that explore contours and blind-contours, negative and positive shapes, still lifes, facial features, shading and cross hatching, perspective, and more.

This class is perfect for beginners, returning artists, or anyone who believes they "can't draw."

Class Information:

  • Meets for 4 weeks on Tuesdays & Thursdays

  • Dates: Oct 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30, Nov 4, 6

  • Time: 6-8pm

  • Instructor: Peg Hansen

  • Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

  • Age: 16+

  • Class size: 7

A Spiritual Dive into Hahawakpa and Land of My Oyate: Explorations in Native Material Culture by Natasha Roozen

“Through many mediums and natural materials, I honor the river and my people, weaving memory, healing, and culture into art.”

This exhibition is a journey through spirit, memory, and land, tracing the sacred relationship between the Dakota people and the Mississippi River, Hahawakpa. Through natural materials, traditional forms, and contemporary vision, these works honor the enduring presence of Dakota culture and the stories carried throughout our land.

There will be a reception on Wednesday, October 29th from 6-7pm with a capstone presentation by Natasha.

This work is on display at our Clay & Creative Center and can be viewed during office hours (Tue-Fri 9am-5pm) and select evening and weekends. Please call ahead to ensure we are open and available when you’d like to see the show. 651-309-4980.

Natasha Roozen is a Dakota artist from the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. Raised in the Red Wing, Minnesota area along the Mississippi River - Hahawakpa - she has always felt a deep passion for the river, the land, and the outdoors. After time living in Sisseton as an adult, she returned to Red Wing, where her creative practice continues to grow.

Natasha Roozen is a recipient of a Project Support for Individual Artists and Culture Bearers grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council.
