This series is offered as a FREE opportunity for professional and amateur artists of all artistic disciplines to increase their learning on a variety of topics, as well as engage in networking, resource sharing and socialization amongst creative peers throughout the region! All workshops will be available through Zoom, and all workshops are sponsored by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC)

Creating and executing successful art workshops requires a delicate balance of creativity, business acumen, and passion for the craft. In “The Profitable Palette” discussion panel, experienced artists will share their insights on how to curate engaging and lucrative workshops that not only showcase artistic skills but also resonate with the audience. This panel will provide valuable tips and strategies for artists looking to turn their passion into a profitable venture. Join us for an informative and fun discussion that will help you determine if teaching workshops is a good option for you!

Panelists:

Peggy Simonson is a retired Red Wing teacher, whose studio overlooks beautiful Lake Pepin. Her medium varies depending on the subject she is painting, from watercolor, oil using either brush or knife, collage, and mixed media. Her subject matter includes flowers, local scenery, birch trees, abstracts. and semi abstract. So, when she is ‘stuck’ she switches it around!

Tami Resler has been working with clay professionally for 30 years, running her own business, teaching in schools and art centers, chairing art festivals and tours, all the while experimenting and having fun with clay! First and foremost, she is interested in connecting people with the arts; mentoring and encouraging artists and all stages of their journey and no matter the media. Resler grew up in the Minneapolis area and now lives in Faribault, MN, where she and a group of like-minded women recently started a non-profit to do just that!

Part Two: Learn How to Fund Your Work with Individual Artist Grants

  • Red Wing Arts Clay & Creative Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This is a continuation of an earlier presentation, which prepares artists to submit individual artist grant applications to SEMAC. This session will be informal to support you submitting the first part of the grant application process, the Letter of Interest. It will also be an opportunity to get support from other artists and from Anastasia Shartin, SEMAC's executive director. This is a no cost workshop. Your order is your RSVP. RSVPs are not required to attend. Drop-ins are welcome.

INFORMATION OF PART ONE OF THIS SERIES:

If you're an artist looking to fund your next project, writing an individual artist grant may be just what you need.

Grants can provide the financial support necessary to bring your creative vision to life. However, writing a grant can be a daunting task, especially if you've never done it before.

This is a no cost workshop. RSVPs are not required to attend but appreciated. Your order is your RSVP. Drop-ins are welcome.

In this presentation, we will discuss the key components of an individual artist grant, including the project description, budget, and supporting materials. We will go over tips for crafting a compelling narrative that effectively communicates your artistic goals and vision. We will also cover strategies for researching and selecting appropriate grant opportunities, as well as common mistakes to avoid when submitting your application.

By the end of this presentation, you will have a clear understanding of the grant writing process for SEMAC Individual Artists Grants and have the tools necessary to apply for individual artist grants successfully.

Presenters are Anastasia Shartin from SEMAC (Southeastern MN Arts Council) and Dawn Zero Erickson

Anastasia Shartin is the Executive Director of SEMAC and is a community oriented connector, curator, arts programmer, and more. Having worked most recently in a primarily rural place with suburban and urban crossover of artists and audiences, she has experience navigating the nuance of rural-to-urban spaces, similar to that of the SEMAC region. Anastasia came to the midwest initially to work on the staff of the education and curatorial departments at the Walker Art Center. She received a Master of Arts in Curatorial Studies from Bard College in New York and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of California-Berkeley.

Dawn Zero Erickson will provide insights as an artist grant recipient. She is an Honors Graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Dawn is an independent artist/designer.  Following her college graduation Dawn moved to New York City where she worked as a Textile Designer.  Later moving to Minnesota, Dawn continues to do fine art as well as textile designs for the home textile industry.  Her fine art pieces have been exhibited extensively throughout the world and are in the permanent collections of the Kyoto Textile Museum in Japan, The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design in New York, and The Art Institute of Chicago as well as numerous private and corporate collections.  Her considerable foreign travel experiences (including Asia, Russia, Eastern Europe, Turkey, and India) are evident in her work.

Plein Air Artists Paint Red Wing

Plein Air Artists Paint Red Wing

Imagine painters situated along the Seine in Paris and transport them to the banks and bluffs of the beautiful Mississippi and you’ll get Red Wing Arts’ Plein Air. Plein air (which approximates to “open air” in French) is a study of how light and shadow interact with things, creating a snapshot of one moment in time that can never be repeated, Artists come from around the region to paint our Red Wing. Each year over 100 works are hung, judged and exhibited.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.
