A Cultural Heritage Presentation and Czech Glass Jewelry Design Workshop by Andrea Turini

Join Minnesota jewelry artist Andrea Turini on June 27th from 10:30am-12pm as she brings audiences inside the living traditions of Czech glass and beadmaking. Her presentation, Heirloom Fire: Czech Glasswork, draws on firsthand experiences in Jablonec nad Nisou, a region long recognized as a world center of bead and button production.

Then, audience members have the option to attend the Czech Glass Jewelry Design Workshop from 1-2pm.

The presentation is free and open to all, but please register below. If you plan to add on the workshop, please make this selection when you register.

During the presentation, audiences will learn about:

Cultural Storytelling

  • The evolution of the Czech glass industry, from family workshops to state-run factories under communism, and how artists adapted their craft during these changing eras

  • Generational traditions — families who have passed down lampworking, pressing, and cutting techniques for centuries

  • The cultural significance of beads and buttons, both as local artistry and as exports that shaped global fashion

  • The resilience of a cottage industry that once fed an entire region, where survival depended on glass and beadmaking — and the fact that many workshops remain in business today is nothing short of astounding

Interactive Demonstration

  • Step-by-step look at how a bead and a button are made

  • Sample beads at different production stages for audiences to handle

  • A Czech button mold and examples of finished jewelry featuring Czech glass

Add-On Workshop: Czech Glass Jewelry Design Class

Following the presentation, participants can enjoy a one-hour hands-on jewelry design session. Each person will design a coordinating set — either:

  • Earrings + Necklace, or

  • Earrings + Bracelet

Participants select from Andrea’s curated collection of authentic Czech glass beads to create their designs. Andrea demonstrates design concepts and assists with selection, then completes the technical finishing (wrapping, crimping and assembly) during class.

We are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible environment for all. About the Artist

I have been a creator of beautiful, handmade jewelry for over 30 years. A master jeweler, I recently spent ten years in NYC studying under experts from all over the world, developing my skills and honing my craft.

While I have experience with many mediums, my passion lies in bead embroidery, the creation of intricate and unique designs that bring a sense of depth and dimension to each piece of jewelry.

I take pride in creating high-quality, one-of-a-kind pieces that are both comfortable and stylish. I use only the finest materials, including gemstones, Swarovski crystals and pearls, and Japanese seed beads, and stitch them onto thick wool felt and then build up. This creates a range of textures and colors that bring each three-dimensional piece to life.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.

About the Artist: Judy Saye-Willis is a visual artist who has lived in rural Minnesota her entire life. Her current work is focused on the use of natural pigments and dyes made from locally grown and foraged materials. She produces bodies of work on textiles and paper that often speaks to choices, environmental stewardship and human conditions.

“I have been a fiber artist for most of my life. My work has been rich in texture with exciting color, has strong eye appeal and often a message of environmental stewardship. When I discovered natural dyes I read everything I could find about the cultures, history, geography and politics that surround textiles and natural dyes. I also discovered that I could locally forage for dye materials in the prairies, ditches, woodlands, by the streams and in some of my friend’s gardens. I was seeing Natures Gentle Colors in a whole new way.  I would ask my mentor for recipes and processes. He finally told me to use my eyes and head. That has served me well. I can now collaborate with the materials having mastered techniques. However, I still have green stains on my knees.” Judy has a stula (studio lab) in Northfield, MN. Flower Eco Printing on Fabric at Flower Valley Orchards Flower Farm

  • Flower Valley Orchards Flower Farm (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for an introduction to the fascinating world of Flower Pounding or Hapazome in Japanese, a natural dyeing process that uses leaves, flowers, and other organic materials to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind designs on fabric. Participants will learn about the principles of eco-printing, including the types of plants best suited for dyeing, and a discussion of mordants and how they affect the colors and permanence of the prints.

The class will provide hands-on experience as students choose plant materials provided by Flower Valley Orchards Flower Farm, arrange them on prepared fabric (we will provide natural cotton fabric) and use a hammer to pound the flowers into the material to transfer the pattern. By the end of the class attendees will leave with their own beautifully printed fabric and a better understanding of natural dyeing.

About the Artist: Trained as a graphic designer with a degree from Iowa State, Dan paints in the studio and on location (plein air), and has won many awards including several best-of-show in juried competitions and art fairs throughout the Midwest.

For more than 25 years, Dan has taught watercolor and previously served as the president of the MN Watercolor Society. His technique uniquely combines opaque acrylic with transparent watercolor that stylizes the landscape and is influenced by printmakers and batik artists.

Dan has been fortunate to have two extended stays in China - painting, teaching and exhibiting. In addition to China, he has painted in Puerto Rico, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and throughout the United States.

“I am obsessed with design, negative shape making and the ruggedness of the north. These obsessions led me to study Canadian painters, most notably Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, who worked primarily in the early 1900’s. The illustrative style is personally relatable to me. Their career paths evolved from graphic designers, to illustrators, to painters. This has been my path as well.

Finding rhythm in the landscape has become a hallmark of my work. Rhythm to me is connecting highlight shapes with linked shadow shapes in an interesting way that creates movement and pathways for the eye.

My technique uniquely combines opaque acrylic with transparent watercolor that stylizes the landscape and is influenced by printmakers and batik artists. Their approach to creating negative shapes is similar to how I construct and distill my scenes. “ - Dan Wiemer

About the Artist: “I have been a fiber artist for most of my life.

Using pre-made slabs, students will be guided through the entire process from tracing templates, to construction, and finishing touches. Learn techniques for rolling and prepping sturdy slabs, creating strong joints and seams, and finishing touches for a refined piece. At the end of the workshop, Andrew will discuss various techniques for adding texture, pattern, and color to your forms.

This workshop is ideal for potters and ceramicists looking to work off the wheel, or artists looking to translate their sketches into reality.

All materials will be provided, however if you have clay tools you like to use please bring these.

Workshop Information:

  • Date: Saturday, April 18th from 10am-4pm (1 hour break for lunch)

  • Teaching artist: Andrew Rivera

  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate (prior clay experience preferred)

  • Ages 18+

  • Participation fee: $15 per person

About the Artist: Andrew Rivera holds a BFA in Ceramics and Sculpture from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and completed the MN NICE certificate program at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis. He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Graphic and Web Design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Rivera has completed a long-term residency at The Clay Studio of Missoula and works out of his studio in downtown Hastings, MN, while teaching ceramics in the Twin Cities area.

“My work pulls from a mix of influences including pre-Hispanic forms, 19th-century Mexican printmakers, my culture, skateboarding, family, and food. I look to pre-Hispanic ceramics as a way to stay connected to my ancestors and to highlight a part of history that’s often misunderstood. I’m also inspired by printmakers like José Guadalupe Posada and Manuel Manilla, whose imagery helped inform a largely illiterate public and even played a role in the Mexican Revolution.” Learn more about Andrew at his website.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.
