Explore the many techniques of surface decoration in ceramics! This workshop is ideal for beginners and those looking to expand their skills with clay. This hands-on course focuses on various surface decoration techniques on bisqueware including explorations of wax resist, underglaze painting processes, and the frozen pond technique with glaze.
Wax Resist
This traditional method allows potters to create intricate patterns and selective glazing, highlighting specific areas while leaving others unglazed. This can be used to create contrasting colors, layered imagery, and detailed motifs on the clay surface. Learn methods of applying wax to clay, creating detailed designs, and achieving a layered surface with underglaze and glaze.
Frozen Pond with Glaze
The frozen pond glazing technique layers transparent and opaque glazes to achieve a frosty, glass-like surface reminiscent of ice patterns. Learn how to select the right glazes and apply them in the correct order to achieve this stunning surface.
Underglaze Painting
Underglaze is a paint-like substance made of clay and pigments that adheres to the ceramic surface. It doesn’t flow like glaze during firing, allowing for detailed and precise designs. Explore various application techniques, mixing and layering colors, and sealing the imagery with glaze.
