Workshop Description: Join our Resident Artist Laura Williams for this hands-on workshop that explores cartooning as a making philosophy. This workshop is ideal for those looking to expand on their drawing and surface design skills.
Participants will complete making and drawing exercises, gain confidence in visual storytelling, and learn how to bring their stories to life on clay. This workshop explores several methods for drawing on clay tiles using underglaze, glaze, inlay, sgraffito and underglaze pencil.
Open to all skill levels. Clay experience is helpful but not required!

About the Artist: Laura Williams (they/she) is a UK born, Midwestern ceramic artist whose practice explores material, narrative, process and play. Laura has spent the last year living in a travel trailer with her partner and their two cats, making her work while teaching at community art studios nationwide. Laura’s pottery is formed through pinching and the potter's wheel. She decorates her surfaces with a mixture of terra sigillata, underglaze, underglaze pencil and glaze. Laura studied ceramics at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and has taught in community art centers for the last ten years.
Laura will be joining Red Wing Arts as a Resident Artist at the Clay & Creative Center for the month of November, where she will be making a new collection of work.
“I’m interested in clay’s ability to record our choices, throw lines, fingerprints, brush strokes, our moods. I'm inspired by contemporary illustration. I love punchy colours, pencil lines, comics, and stories. My work evokes the colours and shapes found in the cartoons I grew up watching. I enjoy story telling in pieces that my neighbors then use. In the rise of a.i. handmade, human objects take on a new level of importance. I'm proud to be a part of an alternative economy in which we use our hands to tell our stories, make slowly and intentionally.
