Workshop Description: In this workshop, botanical artist Nancy Lizette Berlin will teach participants how to combine artistic expression with scientific observation, capturing the beauty and intricate details of local plants. The workshop will begin with a short hike at He Mni Can, where students will practice sketching plants outdoors. Then we will move to the Clay & Creative Center where Nancy will walk students through turinging their sketches into small 4x6 paintings or cards using watercolors.

This workshop is great for artists looking to develop their drawing and observational skills, and painting with watercolors.

All materials will be provided, and students will receive their own paper and a brush for further practice.

We will have a rain location in case of inclement weather.

  • Date: Saturday, June 20th from 9am-1pm

  • Level: All skill levels welcome - drawing and painting experience is helpful but not required.

Screen-printed Transfers on Clay with Kip O‘Krongly

This workshop is part of The Artist’s Studio Series, a program designed to increase access to training and education for working artists. Learn more here.

Workshop Description: Over the course of this workshop, Kip will demystify the process of turning detailed botanical drawings into colorful underglaze transfers. You'll learn to decorate leather-hard ceramic pieces using screen printing techniques you can do right at home - from burning photo emulsion screens, to printing, coloring, and applying the vibrant transfer images to your work. Come join Kip as she shares ways you can utilize this exciting process to develop striking ceramic surfaces all your own!

Kip will demonstrate:

  • A unique collaging technique for layering multiple images onto leather-hard work

  • Two methods for burning photo emulsion screens at home using screens from EZ Screen and Small Dog Prints, plus tips for achieving exceptionally crisp screens and designs

  • How to generate small test pieces ideal for exploring the transfer process

  • Methods for applying transfers to curved surfaces with professional results

  • Ways to create seamless ombre color washes on backgrounds with underglazes

Skill Level: All levels welcome, but some understanding of the ceramic process and terms would be helpful!

About the Artist: Kip O’Krongly is a studio artist and instructor living in Northfield, Minnesota.  She has exhibited her work across the country, is highlighted in many ceramic publications and was a cover artist with both Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated.  Kip regularly exhibits on the St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour and teaches at craft schools across the country.  Past workshops ranged from Penland and Arrowmont, to Watershed and the Archie Bray Foundation. She has been a short-term resident at both Watershed and Archie Bray, and received a McKnight Artist Grant.

Workshop Description: In this workshop, students will learn about clay techniques that David Swenson utilizes in his own work. This includes surface design, building motifs and patterns, embellishment, and interpreting historical decorative arts through a contemporary lens. There will also be discussions on focusing your practice as an artist in order to build something sustainable.

About the Artist: David “Swen” Swenson is a ceramic and sound artist from Clearwater, MN. He has been teaching ceramics at various institutions around the Twin Cities area since 2009, and has been working with clay since 2002.

“My work is about nostalgia and play. These pieces are meant to evoke feelings of times past, and to revere the motifs and patterns from historical decorative arts.  They offer a contemporary perspective of those traditions while re-contextualizing their content. Workshop Description: Curious about those ancient mosaics you see in Europe? Come and learn about the traditional methods and materials of mosaic, and make your own!

We will start the morning with an informative presentation about the history and traditions of mosaics, followed by a Q & A. See a demo of the tools and techniques of the ancient mosaics.

Then in the afternoon, explore and create your own small 4”x4” mosaic using Italian Smalti with traditional and modern tools.

All materials will be provided.

  • Date: Saturday, October 24th from 10am-3pm (includes a break for lunch)

About the Artist: Debra was born and raised in rural Minnesota. She attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and worked as a certified professional picture framer, opening her own art and framing gallery business in Rochester, MN.

In 2000, Debra moved to Eau Claire, WI, working in the Art and Framing industry. In 2008, she received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from University of Wisconsin- Stout with a painting concentration. She then went on to work as Assistant Director of the Furlong Gallery at UW-Stout and Coordinatior of Gallery 231, the student gallery at UW-Stout.

Debra is currently a certificate student at the Chicago Mosaic School, where her studies with modern masters of traditional mosaic techniques further her skill and practice. Learn more about her and see her work at her website here.

Workshop Description: In this workshop, students will learn how to make botanical inks using easily-sourced local plants and materials. Discover how to harvest and collect materials, prepare the inks, and use them for a variety of applications. There will also be time to experiment with the inks made in class using brushes on paper. These inks can also be used with dip pens. Students will get to keep four small bottles of ink to take home with them.

This process is applicable to a variety of artistic mediums including watercolor, illustration, calligraphy, quilting, felting, printmaking, and more.

All materials will be provided.

About the Artist: “I have been a fiber artist for most of my life. My work has been rich in texture with exciting color, has strong eye appeal and often a message of environmental stewardship. When I discovered natural dyes I read everything I could find about the cultures, history, geography and politics that surround textiles and natural dyes. I also discovered that I could locally forage for dye materials in the prairies, ditches, woodlands, by the streams and in some of my friend’s gardens. I was seeing Natures Gentle Colors in a whole new way.  I would ask my mentor for recipes and processes. He finally told me to use my eyes and head. That has served me well. I can now collaborate with the materials having mastered techniques. However, I still have green stains on my knees.” Judy has a stula (studio lab) in Northfield, MN. This workshop is part of The Artist’s Studio Series, a program designed to increase access to training and education for working artists. Learn more here.

Workshop Description: In this workshop, students will explore the structural possibilities of slab construction, moving beyond basic tiles to create dynamic forms. Using pre-made slabs, students will be guided through the entire process from tracing templates, to construction, and finishing touches. Learn techniques for rolling and prepping sturdy slabs, creating strong joints and seams, and finishing touches for a refined piece. At the end of the workshop, Andrew will discuss various techniques for adding texture, pattern, and color to your forms.

This workshop is ideal for potters and ceramicists looking to work off the wheel, or artists looking to translate their sketches into reality.

All materials will be provided, however if you have clay tools you like to use please bring these.

Workshop Information:

  • Date: Saturday, April 18th from 10am-4pm (1 hour break for lunch)

  • Teaching artist: Andrew Rivera

  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate (prior clay experience preferred)

  • Ages 18+

  • Participation fee: $15 per person

About the Artist: Andrew Rivera holds a BFA in Ceramics and Sculpture from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and completed the MN NICE certificate program at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis. He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Graphic and Web Design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Rivera has completed a long-term residency at The Clay Studio of Missoula and works out of his studio in downtown Hastings, MN, while teaching ceramics in the Twin Cities area.

“My work pulls from a mix of influences including pre-Hispanic forms, 19th-century Mexican printmakers, my culture, skateboarding, family, and food. I look to pre-Hispanic ceramics as a way to stay connected to my ancestors and to highlight a part of history that’s often misunderstood. I’m also inspired by printmakers like José Guadalupe Posada and Manuel Manilla, whose imagery helped inform a largely illiterate public and even played a role in the Mexican Revolution.” Learn more about Andrew at his website.

Workshop Description: Physical limitations and emotional insecurities can block creative self-expression. In this workshop, artist and author M E Fuller will give a brief presentation on creating with a chronic condition. We'll discuss what art is and why art-making is meaningful. Then we will create a "mind map" using posca markers on canvas.

All materials are provided. Students will get their own set of posca markers for further experimentation.

About the Artist: “I am a practicing author, visual artist, and workshop facilitator living in rural SW Minnesota. After early retirement, I restarted my creative career and encouraged others to do the same. At 70, I successfully transitioned from traditional and illustrative art to abstract forms, exhibiting my work in galleries, juried group shows, and solo shows throughout the state.
