Judge’s Demonstration

featuring Kathie Wheeler

Kathie Wheeler, the judge of this year’s RWA Plein Air, will host a demonstration for participants of the 2023 RWA Plein Air.

Wheeler is a representational oil painter whose work is inspired by the people and places in her life. She grew up in the Chicago area and studied at the American Academy of Art and now lives on a small farm with her husband in the beautiful Driftless area of Wisconsin.

A lifelong student of painting, she loves to pass on her passion to others. Wheeler is a signature member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and American Women Artists, and an associate member of the portrait society of America.

Editing and Decision Making When Painting Plein Air

with Kathie Wheeler

When painting on location, decision making about the composition and design can take a back burning as we try to capture the changing light while swatting mosquitoes and fighting the wind.

In this workshop, students will bring one painting from the week that “didn't make the cut” . We will discuss the artists original intent for the painting and talk about the internal dialogue of the editing process that could have happened as the painting progressed. Then each student will do a quick study off of the painting that was done on location making changes to make a stronger piece. It is a fun process and very helpful the next time the artist is out on location.

Participants must provide their own painting supplies, none are included in the registration fee.
