Shape of Water

with Kami Mendlik

Strengthen Your Paintings by learning to simplify the shapes of color in the landscape!

Would you like to improve your ability to paint water?  This workshop will be all about the key elements to create the illusion of water and the simple key tools to help you do so!  These two days will be spent painting along the river, studying the fundamentals of creating the illusion of water, and its surrounding shapes through color relativity.  Learn how Kami sees, approaches, and simplifies the important shapes of color to create the illusion of light and water.

Abstraction:  Simple, Not Easy
By pulling or abstracting the larger simplified shapes from your scene and unifying each shape into one color average, you build a strong foundation from which to build on.

Most painters desire to strengthen their work but are at a loss how to get there. I have learned that by simplifying the shapes of color in the landscape, this strengthens the outcome of the painting.  The abstraction of shape is the truth of the shape.  It’s simple, but NOT easy.

For me, the quest for truth is a motivating and interesting element in the creation of my work.  This discovered truth through abstraction is one of my most vital findings towards the path of authenticity in my painting.

Learn to See Shapes as Color Averages
It begins with seeing the shapes of color. The average of a shape is the most that you see when you squint at a shape of color which you have abstracted from the scene.

Learn to See Color Relativity
Compare one color to another to see color relativity!  The common challenges painters have in seeing the average is that we see too much.  We see all the nuances and exceptions in each color, especially when we look INTO each color.

This workshop is primarily geared towards oil painters, although all mediums are welcome to participate as the concepts of shape and color apply to all.   All demonstrations will be done in oil. Please email heather@redwingarts.org after registering if you plan to use another medium besides oil.

Workshop will be held outdoors in various locations in and around Red Wing. Registered students will receive the materials list and painting locations.
