The goals of this youth art instruction series for tweens include fostering creativity and self expression, providing a safe and supported environment for creative risk-taking and encouraging collaboration and social interaction among peers. The classes aim to introduce various techniques and mediums, allowing young artists to discover their unique styles and interests through art-based games, art challenges and mini-projects.

Additionally, the program seeks to build confidence, enhance problem-solving skills and emphasize the importance of commitment and perseverance in artmaking. We aim to cultivate a community of young artists who support and learn from one another.

Class Information:

  • Dates: Tuesdays, May 5 - 26 from 4-5:30pm (Four meetings)

This class is part of Mobile Arts, a program that delivers high-quality creative experiences directly to communities within Red Wing. Our main goal with this program is to expand access to arts experiences and strengthen community vitality.

Workshop Description: Escape the studio and take your creativity into the wild! This workshop is designed specifically for teens who want to master the art of plein air painting - the French tradition of painting outdoors in open air.

In this session, you’ll learn how to capture light, colors, and natural textures, how to choose a successful composition, and basic watercolor techniques. This class is great for beginning artists or those with more experience!

Exploring Climate Science

Exploring Climate Science

Join us for a dynamic, hands-on workshop where science meets storytelling and creativity. Students will build science literacy and ecosystem awareness while encouraging reading, storytelling and artmaking. Through engaging videos, picture books, and storyboards, students will discover real-life "Young Superheroes" who are leading positive climate solutions in their own communities.  

This three-hour workshop will consist of two 90-minute sections with a break for snack in between.

In the first half of the workshop, students will dive into the world of Oceans, Lakes, and Rivers. In the second half, we’ll shift focus to the "lungs of the earth" as we explore Oxygen, Forests, and Deforestation locally and across the globe.

Each section balances learning with playful reflection time. Using a specialized 6-sided zigzag folding book, students will respond to prompts and capture their ideas using a vibrant array of art supplies, including markers, pens, pencils, and water-based media.

About the Artist: Maryellen Murphy holds a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT. She earned an MFA at Mills College, Oakland, CA in painting and sculpture, and a Masters of Art Education from Penn State University. Key apprenticeships shaping Murphy’s artistry and approaches, were with Jay deFao and Miriam Schapiro. A 2014 Minnesota mentorship with WARM founding member, Janjte Visscher established Maryellen’s Twin Cities presence and exhibitions.

Murphy is a Tier 3, K-16 Arts Educator in Minnesota serving the metro and rural areas across subjects and disciplines since 2011. As a Teaching Artist with 20+years of experience she created safe, brave spaces and programs for youth to flourish in California, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and Minnesota. Murphy’s Minnesota focus is responding to middle school needs by providing subject enrichments from science to world culture to robotics. She brings enthusiasm for art-design practices into STEM to STEAM curriculum and tech-arts like SCRATCH animation. In 2018 Murphy expanded her discipline by earning a certification for Curriculum in Agricultural Science Education (CASE) for developing urban school garden projects.

Explore Cursive Writing

Discover the elegance and rhythm of handwriting in this playful, comprehensive workshop where students will explore the intersection of literacy and visual art. Beyond just writing, this workshop offers a brief dive into the history of penmanship, encouraging students to see every word as a design opportunity. 

This workshop will build confidence in cursive fluency, encourage creative writing, and allow students to produce a finished, hand-bound alphabet book. 

This is a two-day class. Each class will meet for two hours.

Day 1: The Art of the Letter 

Day 1 is designed for playful and thorough exploration of how to write in cursive handwriting. Participants will move through warmup exercises, tracing letters with eyeballs and fingertips, while learning how to draw shapes and practice connective movements for creating letterforms and words. Students will create pages for an alphabet book that includes writing, drawing, and colorful designs using the art supplies provided.  

Day 2: Poetry & Book Assembly 

The second session shifts from practice to production as students finalize their creations. Students will design and color a cover page, finish up art works and create poems and phrases, and assemble the pages into a booklet-format.

Upcycled Woven Potholders with Kirsten Wert

Join us to learn a new technique to make a classic woven potholder!  We will use handheld looms and pre-cut t shirts to make sturdy and functional potholders.  These are a great upgrade for your own kitchen or the perfect gift for a friend.  Learn how to upcycle your old t shirts into something you can use every day!  You will have time to complete one potholder in class and be able to check out the loom to finish your pair at home. Materials to make 2 potholders are included in the class. Ages 10+ welcome.

About the Artist: Kirsten taught this class at a nonprofit fiber arts upcycle store in Washington State. She has since relocated to Minnesota and is loving all the state has to offer. Kirsten loves bicycling and gardening and is working on learning new native plants here and growing a pollinator bed for the many Minnesota bees and butterflies.

Tween Art Adventures - Session 3

The goals of this youth art instruction series for tweens include fostering creativity and self expression, providing a safe and supported environment for creative risk-taking and encouraging collaboration and social interaction among peers. The classes aim to introduce various techniques and mediums, allowing young artists to discover their unique styles and interests through art-based games, art challenges and mini-projects.

Additionally, the program seeks to build confidence, enhance problem-solving skills and emphasize the importance of commitment and perseverance in artmaking. We aim to cultivate a community of young artists who support and learn from one another.

Class Information:

  • Dates: Tuesdays, Mar. 24 - Apr. 28 from 4-5:30pm (Six meetings)

Spring Break Clay Exploration on the Wheel

This class allows you to dip your toes into making pottery on the wheel without the commitment of a long-term class! Learn all the steps to make your own bowl or cup, including centering the clay, piercing, and pulling walls. Participants will be able to keep 1-2 finished products at the end of the session. All work will be fired and glazed by staff, in the color of your choosing. All finished work will be available for pick-up in approximately 2-3 weeks.

This class is multi-generational, designed for individuals OR youth 8+ and a caregiver to take together!

Class Information:

Spring into Art: Spring Break Camp for ages 6-8

Celebrate spring break with two days of creativity, color, and hands-on fun! This mini art camp invites young artists to explore a variety of materials and techniques. Each day features guided activities designed to spark imagination, build confidence, and encourage creative problem-solving, all in a welcoming studio environment.

Class Information:

  • Wednesday/Thursday, March 18th-19th from 10am-12pm both days

  • Age: 6-8

  • Class size: 12

  • Participation fee: $90 includes all materials

Students use various hand building techniques (such as pinching, coiling and rolling slabs) to make their own clay creation. Instructor will provide some project ideas or kids can bring their own ideas and we will do our best to accommodate them. This way, your child can let their imagination run wild and create something truly unique! Students decorate with colorful glazes to finish. All work fired in the kiln and ready for pick up in 2-3 weeks.

Paint Your Own Ornaments

Grab your friends and family and join us for a morning of festive creativity and community! We will have a collection of ornaments available to choose from, as well as our classic offerings of mugs, jars, bowls, and more. Get ahead on your holiday gift giving with a customized, hand-painted piece for someone special!

We will fire your piece and notify you for pickup approximately 2 weeks after the event in time for the holidays. Participation fee covers the cost of one ornament, glazes, and firing. Additional fees apply if painting one of our larger bisque pots. We can also ship pottery for an additional fee, perfect for that relative who lives far away!

EVENT INFORMATION:

  • Saturday, December 6 from 9:30am-12:30pm

  • Open to all ages, children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Students will create their own custom Christmas ornaments! Practice rolling out a slab and using a cutter to make an adorable Snowman, Christmas tree, star or other shape.
